Thrane & Thrane first to demonstrate flying SwiftBroadband

World leader in mobile satellite technology, Thrane & Thrane, along with world leader in Business Aircraft manufacturing, Dassault Falcon, are the first to fly a proof-of-concept SwiftBroadband product.

The first successful test flight took place over Paris, France, recently. The flight test showcased Thrane & Thrane’s undisputed Inmarsat related technology leadership with low cost voice calls and data links with actual speeds up to 250 kbps onboard the state-of-the-art Dassault Falcon 900EX, serial number 155.

“Thrane & Thrane has developed the user terminal and ground infrastructure technology in relation to the launch of Inmarsat’s new land mobile broadband services (BGAN). It is the re-use of this 425 man-year investment that has made it possible for us to demonstrate Inmarsat’s future SwiftBroadband service with our SwiftBroadband proof-of-concept product”, states Anders Pjetursson, SVP R&D.

The Dassault Falcon 900EX was already equipped with the current Thrane & Thrane Aero HSD+ system consisting of a Satellite data unit (SDU), a High power amplifier (HPA) and an optional High-Speed Unit (HSU).

Gitte Elsing, Director of Aeronautical Sales of Thrane & Thrane says: “The aircraft was upgraded to SwiftBroadband with an easy HSU box swap, without changing any wiring or other configuration! Exactly the way the existing Aero-HSD+ customers can be upgraded to SwiftBroadband when the final SwiftBroadband product is available”.

The system on the Dassault Falcon 900EX was the same configuration as the system Thrane & Thrane will make commercially available. Maximum performance, minimum size and minimum weight, were the three key requirements when designing the new SwiftBroadband system.

The coming Thrane & Thrane SwiftBroadband Aero-SB+ product will offer a wide array of embedded features, including:

    • VoIP connectivity
    • High speed date up to 432 kbps
    • Low cost voice
    • Built-in router - for intelligent connectivity support and multiple user support.
    • Built-in Ethernet Switch – for supporting numerous wired Laptops and/or PDAs
    • Built-in Wireless LAN – for supporting numerous wireless laptops and/or PDAs
    • Built-in PBX – for supporting numerous handsets.
    • ISDN connectivity
