    ISDN and MPDS

With the option to choose between MPDS and ISDN you have the ability to use the most efficient and economic connection. With MPDS you are always online but only charged for the amount of transferred data. ISDN provides you with a 64 or 128 kbps dedicated line where you pay per minute.

    ISDN

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) provides you with a 64 or 128 kbps dedicated line where you pay per minute. This application is suitable when high bandwidth is required, e.g. for:

    • Large data transfers
    • Video streaming
    • Video conferencing
    • Emails > 500kb
    • Broadcast quality audio
    • Generally when there is need for the fastest, uninterrupted connection available.

Inmarsat Mobile ISDN is a single 64kbps ISDN-B channel offering full duplex data at 64kbit/s.

Recently Inmarsat launched a new 128kbps capability for the SAILOR Fleet77 service. This enhancement provides SAILOR Fleet77 users with the opportunity for a single, dedicated 128kbps channel. The 128kbps capability requires a PIN code provided by Thrane & Thrane.

    MPDS

With Mobile Packet data Service (MPDS) you can be always online and will only be charged for the amount of transferred data. MPDS is a very economical and convenient solution for applications like:

    • E-Mail
    • Small to medium sized data transfers
    • Accessing corporate intranet and internet services
    • LAN extensions
    • Database access
    • Web browsing
    • Compressed video and picture transmission
    • SCADA
    • IP communication

When you are connected to the Internet/network the data is not sent constantly in both directions. Instead the information is being sent and received in bursts with gaps in between. MPDS is a packet-based network that supports IP-based applications. MPDS carries user data across a shared 64kbps channel offering the user a service billed on volume as opposed to time. This enables the user to be online around the clock and only be charged for the data transferred via the satellite connection.
